Gnome Asia Summit 2013 in Seoul

The Gnome Asia Summit 2013, held in Seoul, which is the first time for me to get really into open source community. Meeting many Gnome fans, especially from different countries, really gives me  a window to experience different opinions. Thanks for the Gnome Foundation to offer this chance for us.

When we arrived, the first warm welcome from Max~~ Thank you~~

At the beginning of the summit, I was really impressed by the keynote speech from Karen Sandler. Her own story of meeting open source is really worth to be told. Which proved perfectly why we need opensource software, we are the one who have the right to decide things really matters, not the doctors, or big companies. Only when the source code is open, can we know what exactly we are choosing.

After that, I enjoyed man various topics and different talking styles. As a new one to gnome, learning some 101 lesson is really helpful. Talk from Bin Lin, who talked about the basics on developing Gnome shell plugins. We try how to build up an extension step by step following him, which is very interesting.

Yu Liansu is a designer whose website design I really like. She showed how to do web designs with Linux and . open software. Her sensitive design ideas, beautiful voice and looking encouraged me in many aspects, not only just how to build arts, but also self-motivated.

And the training session from Wylmer Wang, who is the leader of Chinese translation group, also the leader of me, :). He made us know even translation is an easier way the students could contribute, good translation really need many skills.  He introduced the basics of i18n and l10n, and showed them how to begin Gnome translation on Damned Lies. Then explained some specific problems in translation, with a few examples. His topic really told us how to become a translator.

I also shared my experience of getting into a part of open source community. As a student who started technical  career, telling the stories of how many wrong thing I have done, not only avoid others from the same error, also get many good advise from the geeks. Like Haggen So, who talked about how to show yourself to others, and mysql database situation.

From the summit I got to know many people, most are famous for me for a while. Karen is very nice and lightening to me. Thanks for Max and Eric, who talk about the current computer science education of Taiwan. Liansu is very special and article.

Thanks to Gnome foundation for sponsoring my trip. Thanks to all the Korean members. Who helped to host the summit, and made a total success. Thanks to our Chinese members for taking care of each other.
